Olesko Keep

Olesko Keep

Postby jilted » Mon Oct 06, 2008 7:30 pm

This is one of my first pieces that I have gotten to a point where I felt like it was 'finished' enough for comments.

I created the castle model for a BattleField 2 mod. It uses a 4 channel direct-x system, so I had to bake the textures down to a single large UV in order to use it in Vue. The model is a little low poly and I have to admit it shows (its designed for a FPS, not looking pretty).

Anyways, here is my work entitled 'Olesko Keep', I hope you enjoy.

Looking pretty good to me, only thing is I would like the tree not to be in my way blocking the focal point 8)

I bet BF2 cant handle grass like that

Your probably right about the tree. I will have to rerender some evening without it and see how things look.

Here is a ingame shot of the model (in BF2)

You are correct, it doesnt handle grass like Vue (it doesnt do tooo bad for a fps game though).

Thanks for the nice comments.

Yeah, thats actually better grass than I thought it could handle haha, maybe because i'm used to playing RTCW since 2000 with no grass.
I watched your advert for your level aswell, pretty cool dude.

Ha, thanks man. I really enjoyed the project quite a bit. Glad to get a little more 'mileage' out of my model.

I went back and rerendered without the tree in the foreground. Honestly it is there to hide a couple extra flat edges on my model and I think it actually helps more than it hurts (now that I have seen the difference).

Here is a link to more shots of the model and the movie Homer mentions:

the grass looks very realistic! I would take off the front tree and the ones on the right side to see the mountains..but then it's just me. great job!

You are a mapper for PoE? Right On! I found that mod when we were all playin BFV, loved it and there was grea population. Great mod for BF2 as well but it seemed when I was playing the mod population in general dwindled. Back in 42 we had so many awsome mods that everyone played(I loved Eve of Destruction) and EoD for BFV rocked hard as well but no one plays the BF2 vers.

I loved PoE for that modern feel and played it a lot.

Also no Bf2 can't render grass like that but Far Cry 2 can

It's an amaizing games(I have it) and it is crazy that all that can be rendered at 30-60 frames per second on a PC. Fire, vehicles, blowing up, animation, dynamic shadows, every plant moves in the wind or if you drive/walk over it, and a real time day night cycle all happening on your screen.

The secret is the video card, they can process this stuff hundreds of times faster than a cpu can. If Vue could tap into this recource rendertimes would be cut drasticly. Sometimes it's more fun to make a scene in a games map editor because you get decent detail and instant render times. Granted you don't have all this texture control and highly detailed clouds and sun etc etc but it is cool.

Thanks guys, appreciate all the nice comments!

Yes, I did a map for POE2 and did a good number of the buildings and other static objects in the other maps in our POE1 and POE2 releases.

I have been playing FarCry2 a bit myself and am really impressed with the environment, it is very well done. The mapping application seems to be quite easy to use, I will probably end up doing something or another in it. If only to check it out a bit.
